As the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers , and one of only two builders of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines, Newport News Shipbuilding depends on highly skilled machinists to manufacture and maintain mission-critical components.

This position supports precision machining operations where quality, craftsmanship, safety, and consistency matter every day.

The Work You'll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

• Set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment
• Machine precision components used in U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines
• Work with lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, vertical turning lathes/centers (VTL/VTC), and horizontal boring mills
• Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions
• Troubleshoot machining operations and adjust processes when needed
• Verify dimensions using precision measuring equipment
• Perform first-piece and in-process inspections
• Work alongside skilled machinists, maintenance teams, and production leadership in a large industrial shipyard

What We're Looking ForRequired

• 3+ years of CNC or manual machining experience
• Experience operating manual and/or CNC equipment
• Strong blueprint reading skills
• Good math and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to troubleshoot machining operations
• Comfortable working in a large industrial manufacturing environment
• Able to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions
• Safety-minded with strong attention to quality
• U.S. Citizenship Required

Preferred

Experience in:

• Automotive Repair

Technical education in:
